Art Of The Dakotas Artist

Sue has been drawing since childhood, beginning with horses that may have appeared more like giraffes at the time. After attending a community college in NJ, majoring in fine art, Sue relocated to SD. There she deviated from the art scene to study geology. Sue’s love of rocks and geology is seen reflected in her many paintings of the incredible rock formations of the Black Hills and Badlands of South Dakota. Sue paints with oils and her art is vastly influenced by the effects of sunlight on the landscape. She also enjoys plein air painting and participating in plein air paintout events.

Recently, Sue has been inspired to paint the majestic Bison of Custer State Park as
portraits. The goal is to capture the uniqueness of the individual beasts rather than a herd setting. Some of Sue’s favorite artists belong to the Hudson River School as well as the old masters such as Rembrandt and Vermeer. Originally from New Jersey, she has lived in the Black Hills for 18 years. Sue contributes her abilities as an artist to God, the original creator of the scenes she paints, who has blessed her with a passion to paint and and encouraging and supportive family, church family, and high school art teacher.
